The first two exhibitions were held at the Museo de la Cultura Maya in Chetumal in March and April of this year and in May-June at the Museo de la Isla in Cozumel, both of which were considered to be a huge success. Manuel Ramírez López, Director of the Casa de Cultura, where this next exhibition is to take place, has said that he is honored to be hosting Mrs Sleper’s exhibition.
The artist will be present at the opening of "Dulce y Amargo" at the Museum of Modern Art of Gómez Palacio on the evening of 3 July, along with important local personalities from the political, cultural and educational scene in Mexico and from the Dutch community living in the state of Durango.

Jackie Sleper, the winner of the section “Sculpture and Installation” at the Florence Biennale 2007, has always been fascinated by Mexico and the artist Frida Kahlo, for whom she has a profound admiration. In 2005, she received an invitation from Matty Roca to depict her vision of Mexico and over the course of two years Jackie Sleper, together with her husband and children, spent many months in the country, about which she says that: “I took in everything around me, spoke with lots of people and, in particular, got a sense of the country. My previous love of Mexico only grew stronger.... Over the next two years my work will be travelling to various museums in Mexico – something I would never have dared dream of as a child. I feel like I am on top of the world. This is the link that completes the chain."

Her works are at times reminiscent of a variety of artists: Rivera, Orozco, Tamayo and Pollock. Jackie Sleper assumes absolute freedom in applying various techniques and introducing experimental elements: her work is characterised by combinations of photography and painting, and the use of mixed media. In addition to painting, Jackie also creates objects using a variety of materials, which she then transforms into wholly a new and surprising entity. The artist allows all her work to be guided by a profound sense of humanity, and she is an artist in the truest sense of the word: her work has always been grounded in her exploration of the human existence and its significance.

Matty Roca: “I have been able to witness Jackie Sleper’s development – as a photographer, painter and sculptor – at first hand. Every painting is an intensely personal creation and expression, presenting the world as she perceives it. She is sensitive, intense, mysterious and subtle, but also possesses a strong personality, conveying this in her paintings with exceptional clarity, so that she is comprehensible for one and all.”

Jackie Sleper was born in Amsterdam and studied at the Utrecht Academy for Visual Arts. Between 1988 and 1995 she spent time in Ireland, Spain and Prague for study purposes. Works produced in her home country, the Netherlands, include a tile plateau in honour of Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, commissioned by the municipality of Utrecht, and ‘light objects’ for the Kruisheren Hotel, a design establishment that opened in Maastricht in 2005. Outside the Netherlands, she has exhibited in Antwerp (Art-Event), Stockholm (Art Fair), Marbella (Marb Art – Feria Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo), Geneva (Europ’Art), Klagenfurt (Biennale Austria), Salzburg (Mozart Festival), Florence (Museo Diocesano and Biennale Internazionale dell’Arte Contemporanea), Milan (Studio D’Ars), New York (Carrozzini Von Buhler Gallery and CVB Space), and in Mexico. One of her sculptures, "Modestia", was exhibited during the Venice Biennale, at Open 2007. She won the 1st prize for “Sculpture and Installation” at the Florence Biennale 2007.

Calendar Mexico 2008

3 July - 25 August
Museo de Arte Moderno
Londres y Bilboa
Col.

Cozumel is the second Mexican location for her "Dulce y Amargo" exhibition, which forms part of the series of exhibitions that the famous Dutch artist will be showing in Mexico in 2008 and 2009, all being curated by Matty Roca, art historian and art critic. After the success of the first exhibition in Chetumal, David Domínguez Povedano, General Director of the Museo de la Isla in Cozumel has announced that there is great interest in the forthcoming event.

Jackie Sleper has always been fascinated by Mexico and Frida Kahlo, for whom she has a profound admiration. In 2005, she received an invitation from Matty Roca to depict her vision of Mexico. Over the course of two years Jackie Sleper, together with her husband and children, spent many months in the country, where she created many of her works. Jackie says: “Matty Roca became a dear friend. She showed me Mexico. I took in everything around me, spoke with lots of people and, especially, got a sense of the country".

Her modern works are at times reminiscent of Rivera, Orozco, Tamayo and Pollock. Jackie Sleper assumes absolute freedom in applying various techniques and introducing experimental elements: her work is characterised by combinations of photography and painting, and the use of mixed media. In addition to paintings, Jackie creates objects that incorporate a variety of multiple materials, which she transforms into wholly new and surprising concepts.

Jackie Sleper's work Modestia, was exhibited during La Biennale di Venezia, at Open 2007. She won the 1st prize for “Sculpture and Installation” at the Florence Biennale 2007.

CALENDAR 2008 (dates to be confirmed):

9/05 - 20/06 Museo de la Isla de Cozumel
3/07 - 25/08 Museo de Arte Moderno de Gòmez Palacios.
4/09 - 23/10 Museo Palacio Pedro de Alvarado
6/11 - 12 (closing date TBC) Museo del Aguacate, Durango

For further information:

Jackie Sleper
http://www.jackiesleper.com/

Images:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dulceyamargo

Press office
Studio Abba - Corso Italia, 6 - 50123 Florence, Italy
info@studioabba.com

It will be possible to follow the various stages of “Dulce y amargo” thanks to the information and images that will be posted on http://www.dulceyamargo.com/
Visitors to Jackie’s exhibitions in Mexico, can also upload photos taken during the exhibitions on Flickr and share them with http://www.flickr.com/groups/dulceyamargo
At the end of the exhibition series, the authors of the three photos that Jackie likes most, will each receive a signed lithograph of one of her works.
For general comments contact:

For these exhibitions, the Dutch artist has realized a series of works inspired by and dedicated to Frida Kahlo and to Mexico.

Jackie Sleper has always been fascinated by Mexico and it’s artist Frida Kahlo, for whom she has a profound admiration. In 2005 she received an invitation from Matty Roca, art historian and President of the Council for Arts and Culture in Cancun to depict her vision of Mexico. Over the course of two years Jackie Sleper, together with her husband and children, spent many months in the country, where she created many of her works. Jackie says: “Matty became a dear friend. She showed me Mexico. I took in everything around me, spoke with lots of people and, especially, got a sense of the country. My previous love of Mexico only grew stronger. In March my work will be travelling to various museums in Mexico – something I would never have dared dream of as a child. I feel like I am on top of the world. This is the link that completes the chain.’

The artist allows her work to be guided by a profound sense of humanism, and she’s depicted as an artist in the truest sense of the word: her work has always been grounded in her exploration of human existence and the significance behind it.

Matty Roca: “I have been able to witness Jackie Sleper’s development – as a photographer, painter and sculptor – at first hand. Each of her paintings is an intensely personal creation and expression, presents the world as she perceives it. She is sensitive, intense, mysterious and subtle, but also possesses a cast-iron personality. Above all, she knows exactly what she wants. She conveys her personality with exceptional clarity, so that she is comprehensible for one and all.”

Jackie Sleper was born in Amsterdam and studied at the Utrecht Academy for Visual Arts.

Exposiciones Internacionales:

PROTECCIÓN is my first statue dedicated to Mexico. I made it intuitively, before ever having set foot on Mexican soil. The golden angel stands atop lizards that are piled up to resemble a pyramid. The lizards can communicate with God. The angel protects the Mexican people. In one hand she has two fish (one of my symbols of life), one of gold and one of jade. In her other hand she holds a little dog (for fidelity).

Jackie Sleper
www.jackiesleper.com
(photo Ruben de Heer)Dulce y Amargohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819001009789734132noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401535787914471557.post-86518751563225691572008-02-22T05:10:00.001-06:002008-02-22T05:11:48.514-06:00EL CORAZÓN - Jackie Sleper<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_inTtye0Jce8/R76t1bmJRRI/AAAAAAAAAIc/nPiTzHj8Ess/s400/EL+CORAZ%C3%93N.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169760555720328466" />

EL CORAZÓN shows a young woman and her mother, who has passed away. The mother gives her culture and spirituality to her daughter. The girl has silver hair and silver flowers. Silver to me is fluid, flowing, whereas gold lacks of movement. I have used silver to indicate that the girl is receptive to each word she ‘receives’ from her mother, and that she herself will pass it down to her own children from her heart. In my work often I often use fish, as one of my symbols of life.

Jackie Sleper
www.jackiesleper.com
(photo Ruben de Heer)Dulce y Amargohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819001009789734132noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401535787914471557.post-39338485566860604472008-02-22T05:08:00.002-06:002008-02-22T05:09:58.790-06:00VIDA - Jackie Sleper<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_inTtye0Jce8/R76tVrmJRQI/AAAAAAAAAIU/l_Q0kKwcCgo/s400/VIDA+.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169760010259481858" />

From the temple of lemons a couple rises, a powerful man and a beautiful woman symbolising life, which is not always bitter, but brings with it the eternal hope of a better future.
The yellow colour of the lemons stands for the passion of the Mexican people.

Jackie Sleper
www.jackiesleper.com
(photo Ruben de Heer)Dulce y Amargohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819001009789734132noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401535787914471557.post-73722018432575009792008-02-22T05:03:00.002-06:002008-02-22T05:04:39.781-06:00DULCE-AMARGO 2 - Jackie Sleper<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_inTtye0Jce8/R76sJbmJRMI/AAAAAAAAAH0/eCTJAkF_50U/s400/Dulce-Amargo+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169758700294456514" />

ROCATIZADA is a bit of a humoristic work. Fortunately this is allowed, as the Mexicans have a great sense of humour. I depicted the Mexicans as red chilli peppers, because they can be fiery and very passionate. Rocatizada reminds me of my good friend Matty Roca, who travels the world – hence also the title.

Jackie Sleper
www.jackiesleper.com
(photo Ruben de Heer)Dulce y Amargohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819001009789734132noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401535787914471557.post-91167317130824217532008-02-22T04:58:00.001-06:002008-02-22T05:00:04.199-06:00ODA A FRIDA KAHLO - Jackie Sleper<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_inTtye0Jce8/R76rCbmJRJI/AAAAAAAAAHc/voglU1u29sk/s400/ODA+A+FRIDA+KAHLO+.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169757480523744402" />

This painting is my ode to Frida Kahlo. She is an artist for whom I have a deep admiration. I have painted her in the form of twins, because I feel Frida had two souls. Her life was one part sad and one part happy. Red flowers, parrots and monkeys play an important role in Frida’s paintings, which is why I also included them in this painting.

Jackie Sleper
www.jackiesleper.com
(photo Ruben de Heer)Dulce y Amargohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819001009789734132noreply@blogger.com
